Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon is broken down into 5 main seasons (in the anime) or arcs (in the manga): "classic" (Dark Kingdom Arc), [R]omance (Black Moon Arc), [S]uper (Infinity Arc), [SuperS]uper (Dream Arc), and Stars. Usually, the season begins with Sailormoon and adds the first letter of the season name on to it (i.e SailormoonR and SailormoonS for their corresponding seasons). The arc names feature the often feature the collective name of the main enemy (Dark Kingdom, Black Moon, etc.). I've tried to provide summaries of each season with as little spoilers as possible, so it's probably not as detailed as you'd want it.
Sailormoon "Classic" (Dark Kingdom Arc)
Tsukino Usagi, 14-year-old third year student at Juuban Junior High, wakes up late to school once again. She's a "boy-crazy crybaby who doesn't work very hard at school and likes to eat" like mad. Usagi's greatest interest is in the warrior SailorV, whose merchandise she buys and video game she plays almost everyday after shool. Her normal life changes, however, after she find a mysterious black cat with a crescent moon on its head. Soon after, her world is attacked by the menacing Dark Kingdom, and the black cat - that Usagi has named "Luna" - magically talks and helps Usagi transforms in the the sailor-suited heroine Sailormoon! With a "little" push from Luna and interventions from a mysterious masked warrior named Tuxedo Kamen, Sailormoon fights against the various youma (demon) that threaten the world. But, she is not the only soldier in the earth. Luna helps her find and revive the "Soldiers of the Inner Planetary Systems": a genius of scholarship, Mizuno Ami / Sailormercury; a psychic Shinto priestess, Hino Rei / Sailormars; and a tough figther Kino Makoto / Sailorjupiter. Later on, Aino Minako / SailorV joins as Sailorvenus, and the senshi fight to find the Moon Princess and the legendary Silver Crystal (ginzuishou).
The Dark Kingdom is an ancient kingdom ruled by Queen Metallia and under the direction of Queen Beryl. Beryl must find energy to revive the trapped Metallia and demands the assistance of a groups of warriors who must steal the energy from humans. These warriors sometimes instill the help of various demons to lure and collect energy. But when at last the senshi defeat them, the warriors themselves attack with their power. The ultimate mission is the find the legendary Silver Crystal which houses the greatest power in the universe and will surely bring strength to the fallen kingdom. The race for the ultimate light begins; will the senshi find the Princess in time or will the Dark Kingdom rule the earth forever?
Sailormoon [R]omance (Black Moon Arc)
In the 30th century, in Crystal Tokyo, a kingdom is attacked by a group known as the Black Moon Ichizoku (Family/Clan). It's ruler loses her power to defend her nation and is sealed within a case of ice to sleep. Her daughter, Small Lady, discouraged and afraid, meets the senshi of space and time, Sailorpluto, and travels through the Time-Space door without permission to find the power in another time. She lands in the present at confronts Usagi, Mamoru, and their friends with a demand: do they have the Silver Crystal? However, the Black Moon follows this "little rabbit" and attacks the present. Sailormoon and the Sailor Team must once again fight against a enemy and save the earth. But are they strong enough for the challenge?
The Black Moon Ichizoku is led by the obsessed Prince Demando and his calculating brother Sapphire. They are joined by the envious Esmeraude and the haughtly Rubeus as rebels of Crystal Tokyo. Advised by the enigmatic Death Phantom they attack the 30th century and follow Small Lady back to the past to rewrite history. With the Jakokuzuishou (Evil Black Crystal) they plan to rule the future and Prince Demando and have what he has desired for so long. Can they the Sailor Senshi stop time-travelling enemies? And what role will the mysterious Sailorpluto and Small Lady play in this mission?
Sailormoon [S]uper (Infinity Arc)
A dream: the earth covered in darkness, the world in complete silence. Three sacred objects come together and bring the destruction of the world as we know it. Rei and Mamoru sense of coming destruction of the earth but have no idea how to stop it. Meanwhile, a sorceress gazes into her water mirror, disturbed by this vision of the future. She is a member of the Death Busters who have come to the earth. They attack the earthlings and the Sailor Senshi must come together again to fight. But, two mysterious soldiers appear with strange objects of great power. Who are these new senshi; are they friend or foe? The fate of the world lies in the hands of the senshi, but Sailormoon is torn between her feelings for her lover and another. How can the senshi fight against these new evils if their leader cannot decide on her own feelings?! The will of the Inners is tested in this race to "break the silence."
The Death Busters come from the Tau System, searching for nourishment for their leader Pharaoh 90. He uses the weakness of a human professor, Dr. Tomoe Soichi, and his family to create the Mugen Gakuen (Infinity Academy) where he can gather energy and food for the dying planet. With the help of his assistant Kaolinite, Dr. Tomoe strives to create the perfect human being that will house the hoste stolen from the humans. But the mission of the Death Bustes is threatened by the onslaught of these mysterious Talisman that may endanger the earth. Can they succeed in their blasphemy of God's nature or will the Talisman bring the death of the world too soon?
Sailormoon [SuperS]uper (Dream Arc)
The Circus is in town! After a beautiful Solar eclipse, Usagi, Mamoru, Chibiusa, and their friends are entranced by the appearance of an exotic "circus from Amazon." But danger lurks beneath the circus tents. The Dead Moon Circus has come to punish the dreaming senshi and spread their world of nightmares. Meanwhile, Chibiusa is greeted by a strange winged unicorn named Pegasus who gives the senshi the power to fight the circus. In a topsy-turvy extravaganza, the 10 SailorSenshi must battle against the Dead Moon discover themselves and the power of love and dreams. What dream may come, eh?
Queen Nehelenia governs the force of the Dead Moon Circus. A jealous and spiteful woman, she sends Zirconia to find the legendary Silver Crystal which she believes she has the right to wield. The Circus has the ability to disturb the balances of good and evil, thus putting Usagi and Mamoru at a great disadvantage. But also, the Circus heads after the horse Pegasus for his Golden Horn and his power. Chibiusa must defend her new found friend and protect what she believe whilst Usagi and Mamoru struggle to find their way out of the darkness. This season stresses the importance of our dreams and why we must never give up the fight; else, the our dreams turn forever into nightmares.
SailorStars (Stars Arc)
All life sparks from starseeds. Animals, humans, even planets house a starseed within them. However, special starseeds have everlasting power and shine with the light of the planets. These are SailorCrystal within each Sailor Senshi, the source of their power. But this power can be taken, and the Shadow Galactica plan to do just that. As well, three new senshi appear, seeming to search for a hope that may save the universe. They challenge the power of the earth's soldiers; thus, the final battle for the universe pits the Sailor Senshi against themselves. It's time to tie up loose ends and finally triumph over evil. Can they stop the Shadow Galactica and these new soldiers from complete rule?
Galaxia rules over the Shadow Galactica, though she is a pawn for the power-hungry Chaos. With her collection of Sailor Crystals from the planets of other universes, she has the power to instill their powers into whomever she pleases. So, she creates the Sailor Animamates to fight gather the crystals for her. But, Galaxia misses four senshi who escape her clutches. She must find them to complete her collection and rule the galaxy! Each season of BSSM showcases and emphasis the power of love and friendship to defeat evil. The girls must depend not only on their own strength but the power that comes with teamwork and faith. I enjoy the challenges they must face and conflicts they have to deal; it reflects our world and sort of gives us an example of how to perserve in dangerous circumstances.
