Chiba Mamoru - the brat, the tease, the loyal Prince; you either love him or hate him, but you can't forget him. He is the embodiment of the perfect man: mature, sexy, and just cocky enough to get you going. Yet, when he comes at odds to Ms. Michiru, Mamoru is struck by her beauty and insightful intuition - though he does impress her with his demure and good looks. Could there be a secret love between them?
The first meeting of what I like to call M2 (Mamoru & Michiru) occurs most profoundly in Act 24 of the manga. It looks to be by coincidence that they run into each other, but we all know that nothing in BSSM happens *purely* by coincidence. Michiru
waits alone outside the Crown Arcade Center. Mamoru bumps into her and causes her to drop a hand mirror. Being the gentlemen he is, he apologizes and reaches to pick it up as she does; their hands touch. Mamoru stares into the mirror as he hands it back to Michiru. She notices the "noble color" of his eyes and asks if he was a "prince in a previous life." Of course, he is astonished by her ingenuity and perception. How could she know that? Michiru apologizes for making him uncomfortable and walks away (with Haruka). This is one of the *big* moments in the revelation of the Outer Senshi. It raises a few questions - who is this girl? what is that mirror? - so M2's encounter is quite crucial to plotline development. But a relationship has got to be on more than just for the story ...
Unlike Haruka and Usagi's relationship, M2 never express any kind of feelings towards each other through touch. I love how slyly Michiru seems to seduce Mamoru and catch him off guard in many situations, as in Episode 108 when she invites him to dance a waltz with her. And whilst waltzing, they discuss:
Mamoru: "Building a future by sacrificing a lot does not mean anything if there is nobody left to enjoy that future. It's impossible to do it alone."
Unfortunately, that's where the relationship stops. After the minor flirting, winks, and blushes, the "romance" ends. I regret to say that M2 has no depth and probably no future. Even though they do enjoy the company of one another, I feel M2 are too alike to even consider being together. I mean come on; how boring would two mature intellectuals be together? Though they face temptation, they are comfortable enough to say "no" and move-on. Still, I know I can't help but wonder what fruit this quiescient love might have burgeoned ...
