bond of destiny

"At that time I wanted to be the wind ..."

The earth glows a dark red - almost blood-colored. Haruka stares in awe as the buildings around her are destroyed by a massive dark surge of energy. Suddenly, a beautiful voice speaks of the "approaching silence." Haruka turns to see an illuminated soldier floating in the sky. Her beauty and serenity greatly contrast with the continuous ruin and decay of the city. The soldier stares straight at Haruka, arms in praying position, declaring that only "they can find the Messiah."

"I just wanted to escape from my destiny ..."

Cheers can be heard all around. The annual regional track meet is about to begin. Haruka stares blankly into the distance - what could that dream have meant? Her thoughts are interrupted by a confident and perky athlete who comments playfully on Haruka's popularity and her own determination. But there's no time for "daydreaming" or small talk - the race is to begin. At the sound of the first shot, the runners sprint off eager to attain the highest victory; all but one. Haruka runs away, away from her competitors, away from her past, away from her future. She feels like the wind: untouchable, wild, free; free to live her life as she chooses; free from her troubles and her problems. Determined never to left that feeling go, Haruka jogs ahead winning the race in remarkable speed. Nevertheless, she doesn't care much for the victory and regrets having ended the race.

The confident competitor before catches up with Haruka after the meet. She congratulates Haruka on her win and takes great pride in her second-place victory. The athlete introduces herself as Elsa Gray and continues to praise Haruka for her calm and her skill as a runner. Elsa wishes to introduce Haruka to one of her "admirers" - Kaioh Michiru.

"There's someone I'd like you to meet. Come on, Michiru."

Haruka gapes at the elegant beauty as she stands clutching her artbook. Her wavy hair gently falls embraces her shoulders as she steps up towards her. Michiru approaches Haruka and comments on how Haruka is not sweating and probably was holding back in the race. What does this girl mean? Haruka brushes off this idea as nonsense.

"You can hear the wind rustling, can't you?"

Haruka is speechless. At that moment, she realizes the look and the feel of this woman. At that moment, she is taken back by this girl's empathy and assurance. At that moment, she knows that Michiru is the "girl of her dreams." But like before, Haruka is unwilling to take on this "new" destiny which would interfere with her own. She stares scornfully at the gleaming aquarmarine eyes in front of her; she will not sacrifice her own life for the sake of this girl. Michiru takes some intiative and asks Haruka to pose for her for a painting. With a coldness and reluctance, Haruka passes at this idea and turns her back on her future. Michiru looks down, disappointed and saddened by this runner's defiance.

Haruka sits at a table on the deck of a luxury cruise ship. It's nighttime and the guests are treated to a performance by the lovely - and very talented - Kaioh Michiru on her violin. A few tables speak on the elegance, coldness, and loneliness of this young musician who's look is much mature than that of any other junior high student. Haruka can take no more of this take and stands up to take a walk. Michiru senses the confliction within Haruka and watches her walk away once more. Haruka closes the door from the deck and cuts off all the sound from the performance.

But it seems as though Haruka cannot escape from this woman. She walks down a flight of stairs and is greeted by a painting depicting the destruction of the world by sea. Michiru appears at the bottom of the stairs and welcomes Haruka to the cruise ship. She speaks of Haruka's fandom at her school and how one student "would like to ride on alongside her in her car even though she's a girl." Haruka sneers and moves towards the subject of Michiru's painting.

"How can such a pretty girl who won't hurt a fly paint such a horrible imaginary painting?"

Annoyed by this remark, Michiru retorts saying that her vision is not imaginary and that she know Haruka can see it too. The two stare at each and grow increasingly impatient. Haruka calls Michiru's "vision" foolish and takes no ownership in protecting the world or what she did in the past. How can Japan's first junior racer spend her time in fantasies and silly ideas? Michiru is fed up with Haruka's selfishness. She states that her dreams was to become a violinist. How can she do "stupid" things like save the world from ruin and such? The two gaze at each other with such anger and disappointment. It seems this couple grows farther apart the closer they get.

It's a new day and a motorcross race is about the begin. Haruka goes to look in her garage and sees a student from Mugen Gaken there. He is in pain and she runs to help him. Suddenly, the boy transforms into a worm-like youma and attacks her. Haruka starts to attack the youma but remembers that he was once a young boy; she cannot hit him. The monster strikes Haruka and knocks her down. Before the final blow is struck, a glowing light appears between the two. A pen, engraved with the symbol of Uranus, glows brightly in the air. Its beauty and luster attracts the awestruck eyes of Haruka and urges her to take it. Haruka reaches out her hand to grab it but is stopped by a familiar voice.

"Once you've touched it, you can never return to a normal life."

Michiru appears behind her and holds up a similar pen (this time engraved with the symbol of Neptune). She holds it up in the air and a light emerges from the pen; Michiru transforms into the figure from Haruka's dreams. The youma attempts to strike the soldier, but Michiru knocks it away and lands smoothly on the cemented floor. Haruka runs between the two and to stop Michiru from hurting the creature. She doesn't think it's right to just kill people.

Michiru understands Haruka's plea but knows what her duty is. She cannot choose her own way and must stop the approaching silence. Before Haruka can answer back, the youma attacks once again, but Michiru jumps in the way and takes the blow for Haruka; she becomes badly bruised on her back and her arms. The youma continues it's assault, but Michiru uses "Deep Submerge" to send a wave of energy to stop the youma. The creature drowns in her attacks and turns back to the boy it once was. Michiru falls to the ground injured.

Haruka rushes to Michiru and asks why she saved her. Michiru admits that she was interested in Haruka even before she knew she was "the one." She admires Haruka's devotion and passion and doesn't want her to take the same path she did. Still, Michiru was happy to find out that Haruka was her partner even though they could never be. She apologizes for speaking on the topic because she doesn't want to sway Haruka into joining her.

Deciding to finally embrace her fate, Haruka stares at the henshin pen lying on the ground. She must do what she has to even at the cost of her life. And, so the love begins ...
