choubi!

H&M as a couple is a difficult relationship to create in real-life; you've got to show that independence yet dependence on each other and devotion that will save the world. It takes true actresses to make it "shine" regardless. Here's my review of the four couples who took on the challenge.

nao + yuhka

(1999 - 2002)

Musical History:

'99 ~ Kaguya Shima Densetsu Kaiteiban
'00 ~ Last Dracul Jyokyoku
'00 ~ Translyvania no Mori
'01 ~ Translyvania no Mori Kaiteiban
'01 ~ Last Dracul Saishuu Shou, Chou Wakusei Death Vulcan no Fuuin
'01 ~ Tanjou! Ankoku no Princess Black Lady
'02 ~ Tanjou! Ankoku no Princess Black Lady Kaiteiban
'02 ~ Ai no Sanctuary
'02 ~ Mugen Gakuen ~ Mistress Labyrinth[1]

Nao & Yuhka are two names you'll hear very often in the Myu world. They are the longest, the most admired, and the most prominent couple in thei history of Seramyu! I must admit, I am very proud of the work and connection these two had on and off-stage (there were even rumors that they were a "real" couple!). The first time I saw them, though, I was disappointed. KSDK showed little of their relationship and made Yuhka look too dependent on Nao for support. Their first duet together, "Choubi!," lacked the jazziness and flavor as the original version and made them look awkward. But regardless, the Dracul series showed their devotion and love for one another as they fought to keep their lover alive. It's so beautiful when Yuhka sacrifices herself to save Nao from the clutches of the *evil* Vampires! And as an added bonus, they're the only U&N couple to kiss on stage! ^_^

As the longest couple, Nao & Yuhka have gathered a wonderful fanbase. I think many people love them because they've lasted through 3 out of the 4 moons and remained as a source of familiarity to Myu fans. They've had much time to get their routine right and compliment each other. Nao has the great singing, dancing, and action that Yuhka lacks, but Yuhka's got a calm and mature feel to her that makes up for Nao's rashness and outspoken personality. Their biggest stage is, of course, the Fourth Stage where we see them act out the first appearance of H&M in Mistress Labyrinth, their last musical. It's such a proud moment in their lives to see their emotional solos and powerfully clear duets in this musical dedicated to this *lovely* couple. Apart, they're all right, but when they come together, nothing can compare to the love and felt between this "destined couple."

Sanae + Hiroko

(1996 - 1998)

Musical History:

'96 ~ SailorStars
'96 ~ SailorStars Kaiteiban
'97 ~ Eien Densetsu
'98 ~ Eien Densetsu FFS (The Final First Stage)[1]

I have to say, it's very hard to put Sanae & Hiroko second because I know, they had such a deep understanding of their characters. When I first saw them in SailorStars, I was shocked to see how beautiful they were playing the "Overture" on the violin and piano; it was soooo much like H&M I just couldn't believe it! The way they looked at each other and the sincerity in their playing was so moving, I had to watch it again! (And make a layout from it!). It's very impressive to see them call out each other's name and enter with such confidence and maturity. But their biggest moments are in their last musical Eien Densetsu. They impressed me even more when they moved EXACTLY together in their stances in "La Fatalite" and held each other so close during their mock-death sequence! I could feel the love all around! I think I hadn't cried so much since I saw the anime death of U&N *sniff*. Sanae & Hiroko had some the best chemistry I've ever seen in an H&M couple; it's so sad they only got 2 year to do it!

Now, I am disappointed that they were rarely seen without at least one other Outer (usually Pluto). I never saw them connect with the type of love and devotion Nao & Yuhka showed; I felt, at times, they were too independent for each other. Yes, they improved greatly on their last musical, but I wished I would've seen more of that connection in their earlier musicals. Maybe its because they weren't featured as much because the musicals focused on the Starlights, but I don't know. Like it said, I hate to put them under Nao & Yuhka, but I just wanted to see more. In portrayal and chemistry, they're just as equal, if not better!

Akiko + Takayo

(2004 - )

Musical History:

'04 ~ Shin Kaguya Shima Densetsu
'05 ~ Shin Kaguya Shima Densetsu Kaiteiban[1]

The newest couple (and probably the last) have done a good job, but still have some way to go. I like the cute look they have and how Takayo plays a semi-sarcastic Michiru that can show true side of Akiko. It's a sweet relationship featured around not just love but jokes and a little teasing. Akiko makes a great partner, gently holding Takayo with a gentle hand and speaking softly to her. Though Takayo is a little young, she does respond with a sweetness associated with a giddy girl in love. Like I said, it's a very *cute* love.

But, Akiko & Takayo still have some ways to go. I don't feel that strong chemistry between the two that should exist in an strong H&M couple. Just because the Outers don't play a big role in SKSD doesn't mean they shouldn't make the most of their few moments together. Even during their "fight against the disease," I feel Akiko over-acting, trying to make up for Takayo's under-acting and resolve. Their singing doesn't not blend well, and you can clearly hear Akiko's voice over-powering Takayo's; it's not a good combo. I like their cute little look, but they need to be more connected and sometimes carry a mutually serious tone.

Asako + Tomoko

(2003 - 2004)

Musical History:

'03 ~ Mugen Gakuen ~ Mistress Labyrinth Kaiteiban
'03 ~ Starlights! Ryuusei Densetsu!
'04 ~ Starlights! Ryuusei Densetsu! ~ Kakyuu-ouhi Kourin[1]

There is not much good to say about this couple at all. Strangely, SNeptune - Tomoko - lead the couple all the way with little help from Asako. The first time they're seen in MGK, they are very lifeless and scared. Tomoko tries to add a softness and sensuality, but ends up looking silly and immature. I do not like the way do no connect and having little to do with each other. I mean, I can really see them by themselves trying to make it on their own, not as a couple "deeply in love." Their singing together was unoriginal and mimicked the style of the original singers. Granted, Tomoko & Asako (if you notice I put the "stronger" partner first) aren't given any original songs to sing, but they could atleast try to do their own on them.

I think the only time they get close together is during "SRDK" during their confessions of love for each at their death. This the only time where they address each other and actually show some kind of love! It's pitiful to hear Tomoko say she "follows wherever Asako goes" when in fact she's the leader of the two. I'm not at all impressed by this couple and only put them hear because they've had a good amount of time together. To me, Tomoko & Asako did not give that love and devotion I wanted to see in a "true" H&M couple.
